RAF Manston closed in 1999 after more than 80 years. Its rich history is extremely well documented by the RAF Manston History Museum, located on part of the former RAF base in east Kent
From 1916 onwards, the Royal Flying Corps & later Royal Air Force played a major part in the frontline for Britain’s aerial defence against German Zeppelin raids & Gotha Bombers. Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bombs were launched & tested at Reculver Bay nearby. RAF Manston’s massive runway became an emergency landing base for crippled WW2 bombers returning home. The first RAF Meteor jet fighters based at the station on the Kent coast intercepted German V1 flying bombs, and Hawker Typhoons launched to support Allied D-Day forces in Northern France and beyond.
COAP's living history photoshoot, complete with re-enactors in accurate period flight gear, will bring some of RAF Manston's vast history back to life.
Featured aircraft for this special time-travel photoshoot include English Electric Lightning F6, Jaguar GR4, Handley Page Victor cockpit nose section (with full crew), North American T-33 & Hunter FGA9 in cameo roles and (subject to confirmation) a Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer nose section.
